It’s always the Uncle, and they always live in the basement. 34-year-old Chad Olm was arrested over the weekend after shooting and killing his 11-year-old nephew.
The police report states that the child, Hunter Pedersen, was visiting his grandfather’s home. Chad Olm lives in the basement. During his visit, Hunter asked his uncle to show him his gun collection.
Olm, wanting to keep his ‘Cool Uncle’ image, decided to open up his security safe and pull out his collection of guns. As he was showing Hunter the guns, he told the boy several times that he did not keep the guns loaded.
He let Hunter handle three handguns before he pulled out a Glock 27 .40-caliber handgun that had laser sight.
The Uncle told police he did not check to see if there was a round in the chamber, but stated the gun did not have a magazine in it. After showing off the gun, he started to point the laser at the ceiling and the walls.
He then pointed it directly at his nephew, and that’s when a horrific accident took place. Olm states that his nephew reached out for the gun, and that’s when he pulled the trigger. The bullet hit Hunter right above the eye.
Lt. Chris Paris spoke about the tragedy…
“It’s horribly tragic. The family is devastated. It goes to show that the safe handling of firearms is a must. The family has lost something that they can never replace.”
Olm was arrested on charges of recklessly endangering another person, criminal homicide and endangering the welfare of children.
