A 9-year-old girl will most likely need a lot of counseling and support after accidentally shooting and killing her instructor. 39-year-old Charles Vacca was teaching the girl how to use an automatic Uzi early Monday morning.
Vacca was standing next to the girl at the shooting range in White Hills, Arizona. In the video down below, you can hear Vacca praise the girl after she fires off a practice shot.
“All right full auto.” He says after cheering the girl on. The video does not show the fatal shot, but it’s not hard to figure out how the accident occurred. Once the gun was put into fully automatic mode, it was obviously too much for the girl to handle.
The gun recoiled, fired off multiple rounds, and the girl lost control of the gun as it jumped above her head.
Mohave County Sheriff Jim McCabe told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that Vacca “just dropped.” He died after being airlifted to a hospital in Las Vegas.
A firearms expert located in Phoenix named Ronald Scott told reporters that most shooting ranges have an age limit, and explains most instructors keep their hands on the gun when teaching children to use high-powered weapons.
It’s a tragic accident that should have never happened. Our hearts go out to everyone involved, and we can only hope this girl gets the help she needs. Hopefully she understands it wasn’t her fault.
