We have seen these deplorable cancer scams before, but 46-year-old Juanita Garcia just added a new level of shame to the madness. Authorities in Texas claim the mother shaved her 7-year-old daughter’s head and convinced her she was dying of cancer.
Why would she do such a traumatizing thing to her daughter? For money. Garcia organized multiple fundraisers for her “sick” little girl. She claimed all the money was needed for the girl’s cancer treatments. Officers say she used social media to trick more people, after she already drained the pockets of those close to her.
After investigating the incident, it was discovered the girl was actually in perfect health. She didn’t have cancer; however, she did have a terrible mom.
Police arrested Garcia on a felony charge of exploitation of a child. She was ordered held in lieu of $10,000 bond. It’s unclear just how much money she collected. The sheriff’s office released a statement urging residents to do their research before contributing to fundraisers…
“In many cases, asking questions and utilizing good common-sense approaches can prevent someone from being the target of a fraudulent scheme. Legitimate organizations, groups, or persons who are fundraising will have ways to verify and confirm information about their events.”
