Popcorn and movies go together like Adele albums and depression. It’s a delicious combination that has been around for decades. You go to the movies, get a large popcorn, drop half of it on the floor and then eat the rest of it during the 15-minute long trailers.
But one angry man from England wants to put an end to happiness. 39-year-old Mike Shotton claims he no longer enjoys watching films inside theaters anymore because of the loud popcorn eaters. He told the Daily Express that his Star Wars experience was ruined thanks to children chomping down on the delicious snack.
Shotton has started an online petition in hopes of banning popcorn from being sold in U.K. movie theaters. So far, he’s only received 134 signatures, so it doesn’t look like a lot of people share his views.
On the petition page, Shotton makes the following claims…
- Popcorn is the least appropriate snack for an environment that requires silence.
- Popcorn stinks!! Literally, next time you’re aroundsome, give it a sniff, you’ll be stunned.
- Cinema chains bombard us with constant reminders to be quiet during the film and then they sell the loudest food known to man on the premises!!!
We can only hope Shotton is dramatizing things to sell his idea. Because yes, popcorn does stink, but it smells like heaven in a bucket. I’ve met several people who don’t enjoy the taste of popcorn, but I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like the smell.
Also, there are several snacks that would be more inappropriate than popcorn: SunChips, Carrots, Apples, Corn Nuts, and the list goes on and on.
If we’re going to ban anything, let’s ban online petitions. They have no validity anymore.
