24-year-old Lindsey Gordon is lucky to be alive after being run over by a police vehicle while sunbathing in Grand Isle. The police assistant chief Norris Esponge was driving along the beach in a marked Ford F-150 police truck.
While patrolling the beach, he ran over the woman and nearly hit her friend as well. Gordon’s mother, Suzanne Baggett, told reporters that her daughter suffered a shattered pelvis and internal bleeding.
She is expected to recover, but it’s going to take multiple surgeries. Baggett doesn’t understand how Esponge didn’t see her daughter, “I just don’t see how he could not see them laying there,” she told WVUE.
And the people who were at the beach paint a pretty disturbing picture…
“Lindsey was being rolled under the truck, and flipping under the truck and she screamed to get him to stop.”
Esponge is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. It’s worth noting that Louisiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Nick Manale claims “no impairment was suspected.”
Gordon’s grandmother is worried Lindsey may not receive a fair investigation, “I would like to see somebody other than Grand Isle take care of it.”
According to Manale, the State Police are conducting their own investigation. The Grand Isle Police Department’s actions “are completely separate,” he wrote in a text message to nola.com.
