A horrific accident took place in Florida on Sunday. A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed by his own father at a gun range in Sarasota. The father, 64-year-old William ‘Clayton’ Brumby was testing out his weapon at the High Noon Gun Range with his family.
While he was firing his weapon, a hot shell casing deflected and went down the back of his shirt. While he reached behind his back with the hand holding the gun, he accidentally hit the trigger.
The round hit his 14-year-old son Stephen Brumby. According to the father and Stephen’s older brother, the bullet ricocheted off the ceiling before hitting Stephen. He was rushed to the hospital, but doctors were not able to save him.
While talking to CNN about the accident, William wanted everyone to know the gun didn’t kill his son, “The gun didn’t kill my boy. I did.” He told reporters that every round in the gun “is your responsibility,” and he’s willing to take 100% of the blame.
The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department confirmed it was an accidental shooting, and no charges are going to be filed against the father.
We applaud the father for taking the blame, but the fact is…the gun DID kill his boy. His son would still be alive had they not been playing around with a DEADLY weapon. America’s fascination with guns is disturbing, and until it ends, we’ll continue to watch more people die for no reason.
